Why I started Ethicol

Every transformation story, it seems, has its moment. Mine was COVID.

I'd spent a decade in big consulting, working on what I genuinely believed was impactful. That was the language we used. That was the work I thought we were doing. And then we all packed up our laptops, went home, and something shifted.

Without the water cooler, without the cadence of the office, without the shared rituals that had made the culture feel real — the kool-aid started to wear off. The veneer got thinner. I started to see the actual drivers of the organisation, and they weren't the ones in the pitch decks.

So I did what seemed obvious. I left. But I didn't leave to start Ethicol. I jumped to another big consulting firm, convinced the problem had been that particular place and not the shape of the work itself. I hadn't really reflected on why I was walking away from the first one — I just knew I needed out. I told myself this one would be better.

Day one, I knew I'd made a mistake. It still took me two years and a redundancy to actually do something about it.

When the redundancy came, I hadn't planned my next move. What I knew was that I owed my clients honesty — I needed to let them know I was leaving. In the course of a single week, three of them said the same thing: great, we'll just contract you directly to do this new project.
I hadn't decided to start a business. I hadn't decided to keep going in consulting at all. But something became clear in that week: I loved the work. I had always loved the work. What I couldn't align with any longer were the environments I'd been doing it in.

So I made the decision that would become Ethicol. A consultancy grounded in ethical decision-making and action. One where values and principles wouldn't be a line in the capability statement but the thing that shaped every choice — about who we worked with, how we worked, and what we were willing to put our names to.

I'm proud of what we've built. Prouder still that we've kept values at the centre of it, because I know that's what will carry us.

And on a personal note — the reason I keep going isn't just the work, though the work is good. It's that I sleep better. I feel better. My work aligns with my values instead of running against them. I have the best balance I've ever had in my life, and I have the room to nurture the relationships and my spirit that make life richer.

That's the why of Ethicol. That's why it exists. And that's why, every day, it's worth the work of keeping it honest.

The AI turn in healthcare: Imaging, ambient scribes, and the trust question we can’t skip
AI is no longer hypothetical in Australian healthcare. It is already in radiology reading rooms and GP consulting rooms. The question is no longer whether it will reshape services — but whether the people who use those services have any meaningful hand in shaping it.
